Guidelines for UPA Board/Staff/Administrators posting to Public Internet Forums (including but not limited to public message boards,  blogs, mailing lists and other electronic methods of communication.)

These guidelines are only suggestions. You are an adult. Your behavior is ultimately your responsibility.

General Guidelines.

a.    Be forthright about your membership in the Board/Admin.
b.    Be clear about whether you are writing in the capacity of a UPA representative or whether you are writing as an ordinary ultimate player (which "hat" are you wearing?).
c.    Be aware that EVERY Board/Admin member is seen as representing the UPA even when wearing a civilian hat. It's like when you went on that school band trip to London and were "ambassadors" of the United States.
d.    Be very careful about posting any specific information. If it is incorrect or misleading, that is unbecoming to the UPA. Better to refer to other sources of information.
e.    Refrain from personal attacks or other crass behavior.
f.     Even short quips about other people or inside jokes can easily be misinterpreted in a negative way. Generally, the more power you wield the more people will scrutinize what you say.

Additional Guidelines:

1.    Personal posts
a.    Include in all personal posts the tagline [Note: I am a member of the Board of Directors of the UPA. This is a personal message and is does not represent the opinions of the Board or its other members.]
2.    Posting UPA-relevant information
a.    When possible, simply refer/link readers to a UPA website for further information.
b.    Include the tagline: [Note: I am a member of the Board of Directors and SERVE/AM CHAIR of the RELEVANT COMMITTEE. The information in this post REFLECTS/MAY NOT REFLECT the opinion of the committee.]

3.    The President
a.    The president of the UPA should exercise the utmost caution when posting to a public website. The president is the official "voice" of the UPA, and even remarks which are clearly personal may be misinterpreted (for example, a reader may infer bias toward/against another party).

The following confidential issues are not to be discussed absent authorization by either the President, Executive Director, Ex Comm or the Board (as the case may be).
1. Individual member information (i.e. address, phone number, UPA number, social security number, etc.) known as a result of individual’s membership with the UPA without express consent of the member
2. UPA employee/personnel information (i.e. address, phone number, salary, etc.)
3. Health or medical information related to any employee or member
4. Any information related to vendor negotiations (i.e. contractual terms, contract proposals, confidential vendor pricing/cost information)
5. Discussions with any lawyer or accountant
6. Any information divulged to UPA board or its administration under an express agreement that the information be kept confidential. In addition, unless such authority is expressly delegated to anyone else, only the Executive Director, Board President, UPA Board, or Ex Comm may bind the UPA to an agreement of confidentiality. The foregoing entities may delegate such authority to any other individual.

7. Any information proscribed from publication by law, statute, governmental regulation or court order.
